Supporting the local community in Ashfield and surrounding areas, Wests Ashfield is once again encouraging budding young talent within our local Primary and Secondary schools by offering students and their schools the chance to win some fantastic prizes.

This year, the chosen theme is: Your interpretation of, “Change”!

“Art is a line around your thoughts.” – Gustav Klimt

Below are a couple of examples on how, “Change” could be represented

“Change”, the past

“Change”, the future

“Change”, how is it viewed?

We’re excited when this time of year comes around and our Clubs’ Reception area transforms into a spectacular Pop up Art Gallery filled with vibrant local art pieces from both primary and secondary school students.

Let’s not forget the, the “People’s Choice Award” category, whereby the broader community have the opportunity to get involved and cast their vote on their favourite piece.

Special guest judge: Geoff Harvey | Artist & Sculpture will to joining us to conduct the voting. Born in Sydney in 1954 Geoffrey Harvey studied at National Art School, Alexander Mackie College and the City Art Institute. A painter, sculptor and printmaker he has exhibited widely and is represented in several state and regional collections.

Of critical importance is the relationship between the artwork and the accompanying artist’s statement. This should make explicit the ways in which the work responds to the theme.

Teachers are asked to emphasise with their students the importance of a clear and explicit link between the artist’s statement and the submitted work. Where possible, teachers are asked to encourage participation in the Community Art Competition by devoting some class time to aspects of the prize and providing opportunities for students to dedicate some time for the making of works for the exhibition.

Please note: Existing works are welcomed.
