About the Community Art Competition & Exhibition 2017

This year’s competition will be awarding schools and their students a share in $6,700.

Supporting the local community in Ashfield and surrounding areas, Wests Ashfield is once again encouraging budding young talent within our local Primary and Secondary schools by offering students and their schools the chance to exhibit their works and win some fantastic prizes.

This year, the chosen theme is:  “Community”!

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see. – Edgar Degas

We are very excited in launching this year’s Art competition & Exhibition. For the very first time the competition has been opened up to both primary and secondary students and in addition to this there is a People’s Choice Award for both categories.

Works are to be submitted by Friday 28 July.

The Wests Ashfield Exhibition, Pop up Gallery will be opened from 9 August to 20 August 2017.

The official presentation and awards will take place on Tuesday 22 August from 1.30 at the Club.

The exhibition will be located in the Clubs’ main reception, on show for the larger community to admire and to cast their vote on their favourite piece which will determine the winners of the People’s Choice Award.

We are honoured to have on board in this year’s judging panel, special guest Geoff Harvey, Artist & Sculpture.

Born in Sydney in 1954 Geoffrey Harvey studied at National Art School, Alexander Mackie College and the City Art Institute. A painter, sculptor and printmaker he has exhibited widely and is represented in several state and regional collections.

Of critical importance is the relationship between the artwork and the accompanying artist’s statement. This should make explicit the ways in which the work responds to the theme.  Teachers are asked to emphasis with their students the importance of a clear and explicit link between the artist’s statement and the submitted work. Where possible, teachers are asked to encourage participation in the Community Art Competition by devoting some class time opportunities for students to dedicate some time for works for the exhibition.

Please note: Existing works are welcomed.

This year’s competition will be awarding schools and their students a share in $6,700.

The awards consist of a combination of: student Art supplies, Vouchers, Contemporary Art Museum memberships and cash.

The categories for prizes are in line with the school stages:

There will be a winner and a runner up in each stage plus a People’s Choice Award for both primary and secondary schools.

Works for sale

The opportunity for students to offer their works for sale will be provided in the conditions of entry document. On submission of artist statements, students will be asked to identify if they are interested in offering their work for sale and to nominate a price. Works will be identified during the exhibition by a sticker which will indicate that the work can be purchased. Arrangements for purchasing a work will be made through the curator of the exhibition. The curator will determine if the price asked is reasonable and if the price is seen as unrealistic, the work will not be offered for sale.

Collection of artworks by the due date after the exhibition is the responsibility of the school or student. Please note that there are no facilities for storage of artworks beyond the date of collection. Wests Ashfield will take no responsibility for artworks that are not collected.

The Exhibition

The exhibition is being held at the main Reception area of Wests Ashfield and formally opens on Wednesday 9 August 2017 at 6:00pm and will then be open each day from 9.00am until midnight Sunday 20 August.

During opening times is the opportunity for the local community to cast their vote on their favourite piece within the exhibition. To be able to cast a vote you simply have to be a member of Wests Ashfield. Voting is limited to 1 vote per member per day. The highest amount of votes in each category will determine the winners of the “People’s Choice”award.
