Around the half-way mark of each year, we often remark on how time seems to be escaping more quickly than it may have appeared in the very early months and 2017 is no exception – thanks in part to the busy schedule of events at your Club.
I wish to begin by extending gratitude to those Members who generously took time out of their busy schedules to attend our 62nd Annual General Meeting on Saturday, 18 March when the 2015/16 Annual Financial report and resolutions were presented and endorsed by those who were present.
April proved to be busy, with many people gathering to enjoy the facilities provided at Wests Ashfield, especially on the additional holidays.
Commemorations for those Australians who lost their lives in the pursuit of peace was an important feature of that month, with a wreath laying ceremony held at the Coo-ee Memorial rock located at the front of our Club’s premises, on ANZAC Day. In addition, Deputy Chairman Russell Smith joined me at the Ashfield RSL Club Sub Branch’s memorial service and march, which began at Ashfield Park on ANZAC Sunday, 23rd April. It was an honour to lay a wreath and to have the opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices of those killed or maimed in wars and the lingering effects on members of their families.
Ashfield Park was also the location one month earlier for the annual Carnival of Cultures organised by the Inner West Council and our Club was the major sponsor. The day provided an opportunity to remind Councillors, members of both Federal and State Parliaments and those who gathered in the park, of the many local community initiatives to which Wests Ashfield Leagues is able to make very significant contributions.
To further this theme, the Community Spirit Awards will be held on Tuesday, 22nd August. This event has three features: the Category 1 ClubGRANTS presentation which benefits local organisations and their projects; the Community Citizenship Awards, recognising and rewarding students and their schools for playing active roles in creating a more caring and vibrant community and awards for our Community Art Competition, which encourages budding young local talent.
On behalf of all of our Directors, I wish the applicants and nominees the very best of luck ahead of those presentations and extend appreciation to our Members for your ongoing loyalty and support of the Club as it continues to grow.
